New Westminster’s World’s Largest Tin Soldier, affectionately known as “Tinny,” is more than just a giant statue – it’s a symbol of our community’s values of kindness and inclusivity. Standing tall at 9.75 meters (32 feet) and weighing 4,540 kg (10,000 lbs), Tinny is officially recognized by Guinness World Records, and has been a local landmark since its unveiling in 2000.
But here’s the best part: on February 14, 2025, the time capsule inside Tinny will be opened, and you’re invited to be part of this special event!
A Glimpse into the Past
The time capsule was sealed back on February 14, 2001, with contributions from kids in New Westminster, who chose to preserve items that reflected the hopes and interests of the community at the time. They even picked February 14, 2025, as the date to open it – and here we are, almost 25 years later, about to find out what they thought was important!
There will be a variety of activities for the whole family, including a special storytelling session by local author Tiffany Stone at Kinder Books, Friday, Feb 14, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. She’ll be reading from Tall Tale - The True Story of the World’s Largest Tin Soldier – a great way to learn more about Tinny’s journey and what he stands for.
Come Celebrate With Us!
This event is FREE and open to everyone, so bring your friends, family, and neighbors, and let’s make some memories together. It’s not every day you get to be part of opening a time capsule inside the World’s Largest Tin Soldier!
