Canadian Independent Bookstore Day 2026

Canadian Independent Bookstore Day on April 25th, 2026

It's happening on Saturday, April 25, 2026!

There’s something special about a children’s bookstore. Bright shelves, thoughtfully chosen books, and small, quiet moments where a child connects with a story that sparks curiosity and imagination.

Independent bookstores aren’t just places to buy books. They’re places where stories begin, connections form, and communities take shape.

That’s what Canadian Independent Bookstore Day is all about.

On Saturday, April 25, Kinder Books is joining bookstores across the country to celebrate the role these spaces play in our everyday lives. It’s a day to show up, browse slowly, discover something unexpected, and spend time together in a place built around curiosity and discovery.

Why it matters

Independent bookstores do things differently.

They champion local authors. They curate with intention. They create space for conversations, creativity, and connection in a way that online retailers simply can’t replicate.

At Kinder Books, that means every title on our shelves is chosen with purpose. It means creating an environment where kids feel welcome to explore, and where families can slow down and share in the experience of reading together.

This day is a chance to celebrate that, and to say thank you for being part of it.

What to expect in-store

We’ll be filling the shop with simple, joyful moments throughout the day. Nothing overproduced, just good energy and thoughtful activities for families to drop into and enjoy.

Storytime with Author Vicky Fang (11 AM)
We’re thrilled to welcome local author and illustrator Vicky Fang, who will bring her Ava Lin stories (published by Candlewick Press) to life during a special interactive storytime.

Crafts with Steady Studio (11:30 AM)
After storytime, the creativity continues. Join Ryan and Rachael from Steady Studio for a hands-on art workshop where kids will create their own take-home masterpiece inspired by the stories.

Drawing Demo with the Illustrator of PAWS (1 PM)
Meet the illustrator behind the beloved graphic novel series PAWS and learn how to draw from the artist. Take home your own creation and a little inspiration for your next graphic novel. Recommended for kids 8+, but all are welcome.

National Contest for Book Lovers

To celebrate the day, the Canadian Independent Booksellers Association is hosting the annual CIBD Contest for Book Lovers.

Every book purchased from an indie bookstore on April 25 counts as an entry. Books by Canadian authors or illustrators count double. You could win gift cards to your favourite indie bookstore, including a grand prize of $1,000.

A day to show up

You don’t need a plan. You don’t need a long list.

Come by, spend some time, and see what you find.

Maybe it’s a new favourite book. Maybe it’s a conversation. Maybe it’s just a moment of connection in a busy week.

However you choose to spend it, we’d love to see you in the shop.

Thank you for supporting Kinder Books, your locally owned, independent bookstore.

We can’t wait to celebrate with you!
